City of Newport Beach

On Wednesday, August 27, Newport Beach proudly marked two major milestones in Newport Harbor: the grand opening of a new public dock and the introduction of the Harbor Department's first electric patrol vessel.

  1. 29th Street Public Dock: This new pier, located at the corner of 29th Street and Lafayette Avenue, brings the total number of public piers in Newport Harbor to 15. The dock, which accommodates up to four 20-ft. boats or two larger vessels, is part of our ongoing efforts to expand publicly accessible docks. Use of the pier is free for up to three hours during the day. Designed by Moffatt and Nichol and built by Swift Slip Dock and Pier Builders, the project cost $262,000.

  2. VITA Seal Electric Boat: Newport Beach is proud to be the first U.S. public agency to receive an all-electric work vessel. The VITA Seal, which cost $229,000, will operate throughout a typical 10-hour shift without needing a recharge, thanks to its top speed of 30 knots and capacity to carry up to eight people. This innovative boat marks a significant step towards sustainable maritime practices. Additionally, the City is developing Southern California's first publicly accessible vessel charging station at Marina Park, supported by a Clean Off-Road Equipment (CORE) voucher from the State of California.

Elected officials and harbor commissioners performed a ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new pier and christened the electric vessel, celebrating this exciting advancement for our community.
